North Pole Speed Record

From Ottawa to Resolute Bay

Ben just called us (Erskine, the web chaps) from Ottawa, Canada. He and the support team are about to board a flight up to Resolute Bay. Located on the south coast of Cornwallis Island, Resolute Bay is the “jumping off place” for expeditions to the North Pole. From there, Ben will make his way to Ward Hunt Island, where the speed record attempt will begin later this week.

Apparently there have been record snowfalls up there, which will definitely help the expedition, and the team sound happy and ready for anything. Due to hectic preparations, Ben hasn't been able to say "hello" personally yet, but every day from now on he and/or Andy Ward (the Expedition Manager) will be posting updates and images to this journal, thanks to the miracle of modern technology and the arctic's network coverage.

The one problem with going uber-fast is that your beard will still be feeble at the end…

    Good luck pal!

Everyone is rooting for you, Ben.  The map is enough for us mere mortals to be in awe of your efforts.  Next square of Green & Blacks chocolate can be your Easter egg.  Great new web pages too (Well done Erskine!).

    Dear Ben,
I hope you have remembered your Piglet book for inspiration?  Good luck on your ‘Expotition to the North Pole’ .  Watch out for Wild Woozles.
Sing ho! for Ben, ho! Ho!

Great to see you and Andy last week!  We shall (of course) be following your progress at least daily and keeping fingers crossed for minimal leads, absence of furry friends and problem-free boots.  Good to see Moki and Christy - familiar names from last time-following your journey again. (BTW putting www. before your address accesses quite a different site - bizarre.)

Helen: Agreed, its a shame about the site you see if you accidentally put the www in the site address. Thats the fault of the site’s web host I’m afraid. Still eager to get in touch with him and get that sorted. Out of our hands.

By the way, hugely excited here waiting for the expedition to unfold. The very best of luck to Ben from all of us at Erskine.

About this journal

This journal is coming to you from the high Arctic, where Ben Saunders is attempting to set a new world speed record from Ward Hunt Island to the Geographic North Pole. The current record was set in 2005 by a guided team using dog sleds and numerous re-supplies in a time of 36 days 22 hours. Ben’s expedition will be solo and unsupported and on foot.
